August Book Review0
A Drink Before the War, by Dennis Lehane (3 stars); read in August 2015
This is well written – and funnier in tone than I remember him being – and a decent story. It’s also refreshing on a number of levels. First of all, the main character man is pining after the main character woman, instead of the more familiar other way around. And there is a lot of discussion about race and racism, poverty, and politics. I didn’t agree with everything he said about those issues, but he addressed them on more than just a surface level and is willing to have the conversation, which I appreciate.
So a well written book that doesn’t shy from important topics, has relatable enough characters that I’m happy to continue reading about, and a story that was interesting enough to make me want to keep going. I’ll be happy to read him again.
